A Question For You!

A Question For You!

Well it’s about time really! It’s why I have been quite quiet here for past week or so. I’m about 9,000 words in and half way through the table of contents I first wrote a few weeks back. Yep that’s right I’m writing a book, well two actually.

No one section of the first book is complete enough to share properly and I’ve not hammered down what I am going to call the book, but to give you a synopsis of what the is intended to be:

Help optimise multi channel businesses by sharing advice and guidance, that takes no more than 10 minutes per day.

It’s why I added an out of place article earlier last week around Google Calendar and major part to this book is going to be your ability to set up reminds to just spend 10 minutes working on your business and for me to show you exactly where you should be spending those 10 minutes each day to really maximise what you’re up to.

A Question For You

I’ve got a lot of unanswered questions currently, most are to do with how deep do I push certain subjects, which I’m sure I’ll find an answer to as I work on them more over the next few weeks.

However…. As helpful as I feel such a book would be to you, what I am considering is moulding the written book to a video diary that you can follow.

For example on day three I may take you through registering social accounts to protect your business trading names, having this in a written format might be suitable for some, but a video sessions of a few minutes with me explain why and then taking you off to go and register the top 5 or so accounts.

So that question…

Would you find the combination of a well written book that guides you through tasks that are designed to take no more than 10 minutes each day with a video series that also literally talks you through each stage, help you to commit to making the actions needed? Or would the book alone be enough?

I’m trying to gauge what would be most effective for you, to take the critical step into taking action for a couple of mornings a week over a cuppa?

Let me know in the comments box below.

    Hi Matt,

Although we’re not in the same fields in terms of sales and methods I’d be interested in reading your book when its finished so please ensure that its available on Kindle!

Also, I’d quite like the idea of having a summary video for each chapter or something that takes what you have learned from the chapter and shows how to implement it the real world (or both!). However, any video should be no longer than 10 minutes as that would then exceed the maximum time permitted each day.

Do you plan to protect the videos in some way so that only those who have bought the book can view them?

Finally I think that I need to talk to you to determine how we can maximise the use of the hits that we get on our company website. I’ll e-mail you directly about this.

    Best regards

    Andy

      Hi Andy,

I’ve been exploring the self publishing route for the past few nights and Kindle would definitely be the way to go for the sheer market potential along with iBookStore.

Part of the Amazon contract is that you must keep the Amazon price 20% or less than elsewhere, that I felt was a problem, not until I started to dig deeper, as part of the delivery contract the sums work like this:

Sale price – (Amazon commission + delivery charge) = Returned value

The interesting part is the “delivery charge”, which is about 10p per megabyte of data, which… solves my question over whether I should include images or not, because in the Kindle edition the 40 or so images I have already (expecting about 60-80 to be included) would basically mean I’d be paying Amazon to host the book (slightly exaggerated).

Originally I desired a full colour version as it was intended to be a “give away” for the site and too many people have said they’d buy it. So the addition of video and the colour version makes a separate product that I can have a as a product download here and as Kindle is giving away the first chapter or so I can do that here as well.

I already have the code to facilitate this as I bought a plugin to do exactly this last year for the UnderstandingE project and most of the chapters I’ve already written would benefit greatly from video content. As for protecting the content, that’s easy either Vimeo or self hosted.

      That’s enough about me :)

That would be an interesting project, I’ll look out for the email.

Hi Matt, the book would be great with the video element used for tasks that may be easier explained as a visual rather than written.ie. file uploads

      Howdy Kev,

That’s exactly what I was thinking (great minds & all that).

Ironically I’m stuck on a chapter on video content this morning. I’ve got 12 chapters at 75% complete, with a possible 15 more and less two weeks to complete it in!

      Howdy Bryn,

      Thanks for the comment.

I was thinking having the book published electronically and a video series that rang along side the book in a diary format. You could choose one or the other, or even both.
